It was just another day in the life of Kassi Riley Vayne, and she was enjoying it almost as much as she did yesterday. She just wished she could find Jackson and get her son his father, so that her little boy stopped feeling sad. She didn't like how he mentioned him, with his sparkling blue eyes down turned, and a small frown. She didn't want to be the cause for her son to be so sad. She hated to see the way he envied the other children that had their parents. She sighed as she pulled on her jeans and camisole. She was going to the asylum to volunteer and just talk to people. She was going to try to talk to Aiden at least for a little while. After that Mallory would be all over him, so she'd need to either talk to someone else or go home.
After getting dressed she proceeded to go down stairs and pack Alecksander's bag for the sitter's house. She put in some of his favorite toys and his blanket, along with some different foods and some movies. After he was all packed up, she walked outside to her silver Volvo, and placed his bag next to his seat. All she had to do was get him dressed and then they could leave. Then she could go to the asylum and get in her time. Hurrying up to his bedroom, she saw her little boy trying to get his shirt on all by himself. It made her smile to see his attempt at independence. She knelt down to help him and then she helped him put his shoes on.
Sighing she made it in record time down the stairs with her keys and her purse and Alecks in her arms. She locked her house up and had Alecks buckled in, in less than ten minutes. She pulled out and headed around the corner to Ashlee's house, and dropped Alecks and his things off, before heading across town to pull into the asylum parking lot. It was almost lunch time so all she needed to do was check in and then head to the cafeteria. It was easy to do, she just hoped she didn't have to stand in any long line to check in.
After checking in, she walked into the cafeteria and grabbed a tray and made her way through the line. She got a cheeseburger, a small salad and a soda. She walked over to the first empty table she saw, and noticed Aiden and Mal were already occupied, so she figured it was best to just meet new people. Sitting there, she dug into her salad waiting for the patients to show up.

As usual when the lights turned out for the night, Ben found himself unable to sleep. The slightest sound from outside his prison room would keep him up. He knew it was only paranoia but he couldn't help that there was someone out there. By now everyone else was in bed and if they weren't, someone was helping them get to sleep. Ben had palmed his sleeping pills earlier and gave them to another patient. It wasn't difficult to get around not taking his pills, it wasn't like they would check. But around three in the morning, after pacing his room for nearly four hours, he was wishing that he had taken his pills. Exhausted and desperately wanting sleep, Ben finally laid down in his bed and closed his eyes. Maybe he could manage a couple hours of sleep.
Not. The second he actually managed to fall asleep, the nightmares began. It was always the same thing every time. Every night he had to relive that one night over and over. He had memorized every detail and each time, he would always wonder if there was something he could have done. They told him it was Survivor's Guilt but that didn't stop him from regretting the course of events. It was always easier to tell people to move on then it was for them to actually move on. Not even twenty minutes later, Ben was awoken by screaming. Or was he the one that was screaming? When the door to his room opened and two orderlies came in along with a doctor, Ben realized he had been the one yelling. He saw the needle and immediately the need to fight kicked in. Still, he was no match for the two orderlies held him down.
When the needle went in his arm, he made one final flailing kick before he felt the sedative kick in. With a slight groan, his body went limp and Ben fell back onto the bed. Damn doctors. The sedative didn't wear off until midday and by then, Ben was too exhausted to try anything else. His feet shuffled as he made his way to the cafeteria. He wasn't incredibly hungry, or at least he didn't think he was, so Ben sat down in a seat and pulled his legs up. As he rested his head on his knees, he stared off and watched the other patients eat. At one point or another, a nurse gave him a cup of water and a small cup of pills but Ben didn't even notice. There was absolutely nothing to do in this place but he supposed it was a better alternative to prison. His only complaint was that during the day, he had very little to do. Lately he had taken to reading but his attention span wasn't long enough. Honestly the only thing he had to look forward was talking to his psychiatrist and there was something quite pathetic about that.

Kassi wasn’t thrilled with the prospect of having to talk to a complete stranger, but it was something she had done before, she was after all a bartender. She was a therapist without the degree, thanks to the numbers of people late at night that would talk to her. They would tell her their life story, over a couple of beers and pretzels. She felt guilty for thinking about people with problems in a negative light, especially when she came here of all places. She started nibbling on the salad that came with her cheeseburger. She was a touch nervous about just sitting here and eating, because she didn’t actually know how many people would actually waltz into an insane asylum and eat with the clinically insane. She craned her head to sort of watch Aiden and Mallory, she studied the way they were so different than most people. She turned her head away at a very intimate display of Aiden caressing Mallory’s cheek.
She sighed softly, knowing that the type of happiness her friends shared probably wasn’t going to happen in her life. Picking up her soda, she popped the tab and took a sip, watching an interesting looking guy dance near the entrance to the food line. As she watched him, she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye, and she turned her head to the side to catch a haggard looking man walk in. She watched him walk to the opposite end of the table she was seated at. She could see the bags hanging down under his eyes, and she felt concern well inside of her for him. She stood up with her food and meandered down closer to him. She cleared her throat softly, “Mind if I sit here?” She asked, not wanting to sound too hopeful, but hoping she sounded friendly enough.
Sitting down, she sipped her soda again. “Sorry, I seemed to have forgotten my manners, I’m Kassi, Kassi Vayne.” She said, setting her soda down and looking up at him. She extended her hand for him to shake. She was a touch nervous meeting this guy that seemed to pull at her heartstrings without even knowing it. She didn’t know if it was mostly due to concern for his well being, or because he had looked so lost and introverted. He looked like a loner that liked to keep to himself. She didn’t know why that made her so sad, but it did, and it had been years since she had felt this type of concern for anyone other than family. She just hoped he was a nice person.

Though he could feel his stomach churn in hunger, Ben didn't feel like getting up to get food. The moment he sat down, he was lost in his own thoughts. Everything around him just didn't matter when he fell into one of his moods. His eyes closed for a brief second but the sound of a tray falling snapped him back to reality and Ben nearly fell out of his chair in surprise. He bit back his yell of surprise and quickly curled up to attempt to hide himself. Maybe if he balled himself up, there was some hope that he would just disappear all together. Someone passed in front of him, blocking his vision temporarily and Ben flinched. It was then he noticed the pills the nurse had left him. Slowly, he uncurled himself and placed his feet on the floor. Looking down at the pills, Ben studied them as if they were some foreign thing he'd never seen before.
There were so many different pills. Sometimes he wondered if they really were helping or if the doctors around here were just drugging him to keep him quiet. He never liked taking them because they always made him feel so...tamed. Ben wasn't sure how long he was sitting there staring at the pills but a voice caught his attention. He looked up at the person who spoke and tilted his head curiously. Well, she was a new face around here. When he realized that she had just asked a question, Ben looked around, as if making sure she was talking to him. There were so many other open seats, why did she want to sit by him? But it wasn't like he could stop her. He merely avoided any eye contact with her and nodded his head.
He didn't want to ask any questions but he found himself wondering who she was. She seemed sane enough not to be a patient but then again, it was nearly impossible to tell sometimes. When she spoke again, Ben looked up and made eye contact for a split second. Immediately his cheeks flushed and he turned a bright shade of red. He looked at her hand for a second before reaching out slowly. It took a huge effort for him not to flinch back the second he touched her hand. Carefully he grasped her hand in a quick shake before retreating again. "Ben...Ben Kanst," he managed in a meek voice. There was a silence between them before Ben somehow pulled together the courage to ask a question. "You're not a doctor, are you?" He asked rather lamely.

She didn’t know what it was that had possessed her to want to come in today, she knew it wasn’t just because she was bored, it was because she genuinely wanted to talk to someone that wasn’t going to judge her, or her son. She had wanted to make a new life coming back to her old town, one her and her son would be happy in. She just wanted something normal, so she figured volunteering would make her feel semi normal. Nothing else seemed to make her feel the same way as helping out and putting a smile on someone’s face. Shaking herself out of her head she focused on what she was doing, and right now that was eating with a stranger. It wasn’t her finest moment, in introduction history but it was okay. She wasn’t one for the typical way to go about doing things. She was relieved when someone sat down and she moved across from him to talk to him. She thought she was going to have to just leave. Thankfully someone had sat down relatively close to her.
She wondered what went on in the asylum day after day, and what the normal routine was. She wondered if there was a way she could find out about the hospital, she was rather curious about everything. She felt bad for scaring the guy and probably invading his personal space but she really just wanted someone to talk to. If he ever told her to leave she would leave, she didn’t want to cause anyone any pain. She almost laughed when Ben asked her if she was a doctor. “Sorry, but no, I am not. I am a bartender in town.” She answered nibbling on a tomato. She wondered why the food tasted so good, she was under the impression that they didn’t give a heck about the patients and just fed them whatever. She just hoped that they were getting all the nutrients they needed and they weren’t being mistreated, they were after all human.
Se looked down at her tray momentarily before focusing on the man before her. “So Ben, how is this place? I have only been here a couple of times since being home, and it seems to have changed a bit.” She said, picking up her soda to take a sip. She hadn’t been in the asylum much, since before she had her son. She came here a couple of times prior to meeting her son’s father, but after that not much. She would come to see Aiden, but that was it, he was after all a big part of her son’s life, so she would bring Alecks to see him. Taking a deep breath she watched Ben through her lashes, just looking at his mannerisms and how he acted. “Not to sound rude, but um, why are you in here? You don’t seem to be mental or anything.” She said, nibbling on her lower lip. She hoped he didn’t yell at her, or call her out or anything. She was just a naturally curious person and he looked like a decent guy to get to know.

His stomach rumbled again but instead of going to get food, Ben merely hugged himself tighter and leaned forward. The pills still sat there on the table. It didn't seem like anybody was coming over to check if he had taken them and Ben had decided that he really didn't want to. He was still uncertain about the woman sitting in front of him and Ben crossed his arms, trying to direct his stare elsewhere. Instead, he ended up looking at the table and peeking up awkwardly trying to study her. He almost resembled a neglected puppy in the rain. The way he was acting was childish but it had been awhile since he had any contact with any humans that weren't considered crazy.
Ben perked up when she said she was a bartender. Well good, she wasn't a doctor. That did make him feel slightly more comfortable around her. It had been a long time since Ben had been in a bar. His last few visits had ended with either him being kicked out or driven home in a taxi. "What are you doing here then?" He suddenly flushed a dark red color, embarrassed by his own boldness. "Sorry, I mean. There's usually only crazy people and doctors around here." It was the most he had spoken in months and Ben felt even more shy all of a sudden. He looked down at his pills and dumped them out on the table. There were so many of them, of so many different colors. He wasn't even sure what they were supposed to do.
Pushing them around, Ben arranged them in a line and then leaned back to examine his work. He pulled his legs so he was sitting Indian style on the seat and tilted his head at Kassi's question. "Well....it's, home. I guess." Ben shrugged, he couldn't really find any other way to describe it. After all, he didn't remember much of the outside world and what he did, he usually chose to block out. "You get used to it, really." He never really thought about how the place was. The routine was something that he had grown far too used to. At her next question, Ben sat up and blinked blankly at her. His eyes narrowed suspiciously for a brief second.
Should he tell her? She seemed trustworthy enough and if he did tell her, she would either be scared of him or...he couldn't really think of anything else. But if she was sitting here with him, then she had to have some idea about why he was here. It couldn't hurt to tell her. Besides, it wasn't like Ben was looking to make friends anyway. If she didn't run away, then maybe she was different from the others. "I tried to kill the man that killed my family," Ben muttered quickly and then looked back at the pills.
